Fileside

Release notes 2.1.0

By Erik Jälevik on 26 October 2026

OS integration gets some love in this update in the form of native Explorer menu and Recycle Bin integration on Windows, and Share and Services menus on Mac. Further additions include configuring default columns and temporarily expanding panes.

Features

  • Expand pane action for temporarily expanding a pane to take up the whole window.
  • Default columns setting for specifying a custom set of columns to show in new panes.
  • Save All Layouts action for saving all dirty layouts in one go.
  • Revert All Layouts action for reverting all dirty layouts in one go.
  • Animations setting for disabling animations.
  • Folder paths accepted as arguments when launching Fileside from terminal to open a new layout pointed at those paths.
  • A button for pruning stale recent locations from the history added to Settings > Storage.
  • Mac: Native Share submenu in entry context menu for sending a file to an app.
  • Mac: Native Services submenu in entry context menu for invoking external actions.
  • Windows: Native Explorer menu with all its extensions available in Fileside via Explorer Menu context menu item or by holding Shift when right-clicking a file or folder.

Improvements

  • Full path displayed in tooltip when hovering over ... truncation marker in a path.
  • Truncation marker moved to the start of paths in the navigator instead of the middle.
  • Last visited page remembered in Settings dialog.
  • Refreshes throttled when transferring lots of files into a folder visible in a pane.
  • Improved error handling around disk watching and automatic refreshing.
  • Reduced sizes of headings in markdown previews.
  • Windows: OS Recycle Bin used when trashing instead of the temporary folder.

Bug fixes

  • Fixed emojis not rendering correctly when used as initials in layout names.
  • Fixed error message after transfer with Keep worker process alive disabled.
  • Partially work around a MacOS 27 bug which breaks access to files with non-English characters on an SMB drive.
  • Fixed dir watcher stopping when two panes were showing the same dir and one of them navigated away.
  • Disable drags fully in a filtered locations menu.
  • Icon column can now be dragged.
  • Mac: Fall back to stashing to temp folder when a Trash fails for certain synced cloud provider folders.
  • Mac: Fixed app not closing when invoking Quit without any windows open.
  • Mac: Fixed open windows state not being saved when invoking Quit from the dock instead of from within Fileside.
  • Windows: Fixed Open in Explorer opening inside Fileside when invoked on a drive in This PC.
  • Windows: Fixed text overlap when tab-completing UNC paths starting with an IP address.

Introducing Fileside 2

Four weeks of voice computing - here's what I learnt

After a recent flare-up of RSI-related wrist pain, I decided to make a serious attempt at becoming proficient at speech computing. My hope was to be able to add an alternative input method in order to offload my hands, and allow them some rest even during my daily work. I’m now four weeks in and this post summarises my impressions. The journey has had its fair share of frustrations, but also brought some surprising insights.
